Our History
McGregor Clinic was established as a private non-profit organization by a dedicated group of individuals impacted by HIV/AIDS. Initially, the clinic operated under the Lee County Health Department, but due to the escalating epidemic and limited financial resources, the Health Department discontinued provider services in December 1997. This led to widespread concern within the community, culminating in a public meeting on January 6, 1998, where over 300 attendees, including clinic clients, families, and community advocates, gathered to seek funding to keep the clinic open.
This significant event resulted in the creation of the HIV/AIDS Patient Empowerment Coalition (HAPEC), formed to develop a strategic plan to ensure the clinic’s future as a non-profit entity. The coalition included a diverse group of individuals from across the state—clients, caregivers, business leaders, medical professionals, and community advocates.
