The clinic originally operated under the auspices of the Lee County Health Department. In October 1997, the health department decided to close the clinic and refer all clients to a local provider.
Clients wanted to explore a way to keep “their clinic” open and a public meeting was held on January 6, 1998 with local health department and state officials.
Over 300 people, including clinic clients, friends, families, and the community at large, were in attendance to request an opportunity to search for the needed funding to maintain the clinic. This historical event produced the HIV/AIDS Patient Empowerment Coalition (HAPEC), created for the purpose of developing a strategic plan. The coalition was comprised of clients from caregivers throughout the state; members of the business, medical and university communities; and a strong representation of community advocates.
The strategic plan was developed over several months and approved in October of 1998. News of our plan spread quickly and as HIV/AIDS clinics throughout the country were finding themselves in similar financial situations, they requested The McGregor Clinic Plan as a blueprint for keeping their doors open.
McGregor Clinic became a 501©3 non-profit entity and officially opened our doors with 100 clients accessing medical care and lab services.
The Clinic vision statement is “giving voice to patient choice” and to that end, McGregor Clinic has expanded services to include medical care, case management and social services as well as a food pantry, and a clothes closet. We also provide community education and outreach, including HIV testing via our mobile unit as well as onsite testing in our Community Education Center.
We now serve over 1100 clients as well as the community at large and our staff and Board of Directors reflect the diversity of the population we serve.
